Discussion notes:

  • easier to make insults in a virtual space rather than f2f
  • we're having to rethink what it means to "cheat" (i.e., Sparknotes)
  • this is nothing new, but the speed and the facility is quicker (the potential for damage is exponential)
  • is concerning to think that students are not differentiating (generally speaking) between various types of resources (i.e., Sparknotes)
  • plagiarism (understanding the lines); and what are the implications for teaching (what are the gaps between teaching and learning)
  • we need to have those discussions with students (rather than "assign and assess," Dick Allison); are we moving away from a "process-oriented" type of instruction?; are there teachers who think having those discussions compete with time to "teach to the test"?
  • what issues of "morality"/moral responsibility do teachers face (i.e., defining cheating, plagiarism, ownership, etc.)
  • risk leading students into "soul dead" jobs by not pressing them to think critically (still need to synthesize, to think through, the analyze, to articulate)
  • cyber-bullying
  • do we want to put ourselves "out there" and encourage young people to put themselves out there or is there a spectrum where we need to address issues of "revealing yourself" in potentially dangerous ways versus using technology tools to have a "voice"
  • we need to pay attention to how schools are using it and think ethically about how those literacy practices are functioning
  • new skills (the etiquette, the respect, the compassion) and literacy practices change when you're in virtual environments versus f2f interactions
  • using technology is inherently progressive or "good" is a misnomer (it's how we use it)
